Mariners flood Trojan Den
October 1, 2009
VAR
The atmosphere of the varsity match was that of a playoff game as the Trojan den sparked Castro Valley and gave them a huge home-court advantage. Standing room only student section, screaming fans, synchronized chants every time they touched the ball only put the Mariners for a bigger fight. Led by the strong leadership of senior captains Stefany Taylor and Laura Burckhardt, Moreau quieted the Cameron Crazies of Castro Valley as they stole game one by coming from behind. The chanting and clapping didn’t stop between the games or during the timeouts. Castro Valley countered back with a game two win, which only fueled the fire of the pronounced Trojan den. Moreau delivered a huge win in game three with Stefany Taylor and Jessica King defending the back row and Laura Burckhardt teeing up slams from Meagan Scully, Melissa Paterson, Rebecca Quintero, and Jade Santos. Momentum shifted the Mariners’ way and the Trojan den was silenced. Moreau carried that momentum to a game four win and won a crucial match for first place in league.
JV
Girls’ Volleyball shocked Castro Valley in their backyard and swept both the JV and varsity matches to draw first blood in league play between the two squads. JV lost the first game of their match, but stormed back in the second to tie up the score. Led by freshmen Cassidy Lyon and Remy Puo, Moreau fought off the adversity from the first game by dominating the second game with precise passes and accurate spikes. The third game couldn’t have started any better for the Mariners as they jumped out to a 7-1 lead until the Trojan coach desperately had to call timeout. The timeout paid off as they rallied to take the lead 9-7 with an 8-0 run. Moreau didn’t quit. Screaming Castro Valley fans didn’t seem to rattle the Mariners as they fought back to tie up the score eventually at 13. 2 quick points after another Castro Valley timeout gave the girls the impressive win to keep their undefeated season alive.
