Cheer and song kick it up a notch

October 1, 2009

There’s the mat and there song leader Brittany Andres is, she runs and hurls her entire body over do create a gravity defying trick. “Its not even that hard I just jumped really high and threw my body around and did it my first time,” Andres said.

Some of the more advanced tricks the girls are attempting to try to add more tumbling and possibly aerials.  “We are going to try to incorporate new tumbling and we’re going to find out what we can master or even if just one of us can.” Song Co-Captain Megan O’Bryan said.  “All of the girls have had some form or training before so they aren’t just doing this blindly.”

One of the changes the being made is a shift in focus in there performances at games and rallies. The team really would like to make spectators want to jump out of the bleachers and join them. “This year we are really trying to bring out the performance aspect and have more intensity,” song Coach Jasmine Sowunmi Ogle said.

The girls are working very hard to push themselves further and perfect the skills they already have while also trying to learn new crowd pleasing tricks.  “We are trying to get the split jumps to be our signature,” Coach Jasmine said. “The jumps we are working on are toe touches.  We want to see that half the girls can really get them,”

Audiences may have to wait a little while before seeing some of the more advanced tricks.  “ They’re progressing, they have a little ways to go,” Coach Jasmine said.

Something spectators will not need to wait long for are the new chants, cheers, and dancing.  Their conditioning regimen is also more intense; the girls have added everyday workouts. “ The exorcizes are different.  We want to try stunting and new cheers, chants, and with dancing have more hip-hop,” Captain Kiani Nasario said.

These new additions not only benefit the people watching but also give the cheerleaders a boost of confidence.  “It will make us feel like cheerleaders since we don’t have people who can do a back tuck handspring or something. It will help make our routines more interesting,” junior Neryssa Lezada said.

“I am excited because we are competing at regionals this November and while I am nervous, I hope we can place,” senior Helene Nepomuceno said.
