Don’t blame it on the rain

April 3, 2009

Call me crazy.

I love rain couture with clear umbrellas and rain boots.

I love jumping and running through puddles while people are standing nearby and intentionally getting them wet.

I love curling up in a blanket watching a movie with hot chocolate as the rain pats the roof.

I love sending “boat” leaves down the gutter full of gushing water after a big rain.

I love the April showers that are supposed to bring May flowers.

It’s not that I look forward to possibly spinning out on my way to school, but we need the cloudy, rainy days.

And I’m sorry if the rain makes you complain if you just washed car your car or makes your straightened hair frizzy. That sucks.

But so does having a statewide drought.

California has declared a drought for the third year in a row.

The drought has caused the price of water to go up-yes, the water coming from the faucets inside and outside your house costs money. With this recession, I’m sure your parents wouldn’t mind if you helped save your family a few cents.

The drought will cause an expected 70,000 jobs to be lost.

But how can rain be so influential?

Land goes unplanted. Less produce is grown because you can only get what you put in. Fewer workers are needed or are hired to maintain the 300 different varieties of produce. These farmers don’t need the business from other people who cater to farms’ and orchards’ needs, such as hay growers or sprinkler fixers.

There is a trickle-down effect.

We don’t live in the Central Valley where most of the farming is, but California produces half of the country’s fruits, nuts, and vegetables.

Australia is suffering from a drought too. To save water, they must ration it, or watch how much they use each time so they will have more for the next day. One way a family rations water is to take a shower with another person while standing in buckets. The buckets catch the water from going down the drain so they can reuse it.

Imagine a world without rain. We wouldn’t have rainbows or waterfalls! Or produce, cattle for food and dairy, jobs, showers, and green lawns just to name a few more.

Point is, I have practical reasons to tolerate getting my outfit ruined every time it rains.
