Junior Adriana Jones Lima is a vivacious young lady with an infectious laugh. Her initially shy demeanor is misleading — she’s an outgoing, fun-loving girl who likes trying new things and being crazy with her friends. When she’s not working on the sports section of The Explorer, she can be found snorkeling or kayaking. She finds great enjoyment in music, as exhibited through her spot-on impression of Shakira. Her new favorite movie is The Princess and the Frog. Who will be her Prince Naveen?

The varsity girls volleyball team was playing Newark Memorial and was down 3-2 in the first game. PE teacher Janet Chrisman, their coach, was not happy.
Then it hit.
“It felt like someone was kicking the bleachers but no one was sitting behind us,” Chrisman said. “[The players] didn’t notice it at first. They thought they were moving their feet really fast.”
A handful of the Moreau faculty, including Chrisman, was here 20 years ago when the Loma Prieta Earthquake occurred on October 17, 1989.
The 7.1 magnitude earthquake occurred at 5:04 p.m. when most students and staff were off campus, but athletic events were happening.
Chrisman remembers hearing spectators scream and run off the bleachers on the other side of the gym. Everyone evacuated to the parking lot and the game was postponed.
The surprise didn’t end for Chrisman and Krisman when they experienced two more aftershocks in the girls’ locker room.
“Mrs. Krisman and I had to get our stuff. All the lockers were banging and shaking. We forgot about everything and we left the building.”
US history teacher Phil Wilder and Assistant Principal of Instruction Mike Aquino ’91 were at cross country practice at Garin Park during the quake.
“These horses were going nuts. I thought we spooked them,” Wilder said. “I’ll never forget there was this dog digging furiously at the ground.”
“We were running and it sounded like a wind and trees were moving,” Aquino said. “We had done a complete practice. We had no idea. Back on Mission, the lights were out and we turned on the radio.”
Back at school, everyone was afraid.
“It was so scary,” Chrisman said. “I didn’t want to go home alone. You heard about the earthquake. Then the Cypress Structure. Then the Bay Bridge. Big things were crashing down and you think your little house is going to crash down.”
The World Series game between the Oakland A’s and the San Francisco Giants made the roads clearer.
“We were thankful for the game. No one was on the road. The Bay Area was at a TV set.”
Since the incident, Chrisman keeps extra food and clothes at Moreau.
The school couldn’t wait to decide what to do next.
“Administrators talked that evening and decided there’d be no school the next day,” Site Services Director Ray Breves said. “Some [students] didn’t hear and came to school but were sent home.”
A structural engineer did an inspection on the building. After it was cleared, they asked their insurance company if they should open the school.
“A lot of schools closed for many days,” Breves said. “We were only closed that one day. Everything was normal.”
As a student, Aquino was relieved to hear school was canceled the next day. But with relief, also came fear for his father, an Oakland police officer.
“I didn’t see my dad for a week,” Aquino said.
He remembers everyone telling stories for a couple weeks.
“Everyone had a take on it. Some were freaked out because they felt it.”
After the initial trauma, people realized the importance of having an action plan.
“Safety plans were initiated and it gets complicated,” Breves said, as he remembered how perspectives shifted. “No one had seen a freeway collapse, buildings pancake. People thought a whole different way. It renewed thoughts about safety.”
Laws changed regarding “seismic upgrades,” according to Breves, and Moreau had to adapt. In Garin Gym, extra support had to be added to hold gym walls and roof better. In most classrooms, most added walls are camouflaged since they were inserted right next to normal walls. One visible wall creates the alcove in C07.
While buildings could be fixed and rebuilt, Chrisman can still remember the emotional trauma from 20 years ago.
“I really thought I was going to die that day.”

If you’re reading this, you probably have a Facebook. Chances are, most people you know have one, too.

Like many other Internet phenomena, Facebook began as a basic networking website and morphed virtually overnight into one of the world’s most frequently visited websites.

Much of the student body at Moreau is gradually migrating to Facebook due to the drought of communication on MySpace.

“It came to a point where I’d sign onto MySpace and absolutely no on would be online, so I think I was forced into making a Facebook,” senior Cindy Machado said.

With its booming online community, Facebook has been making valiant efforts to satisfy its users. The functional interface, thriving newsfeed, and addition of third party game applications are only a few reasons why Facebook has been an immediate success story.

“I think that people like Facebook because it is very interactive,” junior Sarah Creely said. “You can join in on any conversation you see.”

Facebook exceeds MySpace in new users with over 1 million signing up every week, adding to the whopping total of 50 million active users today, according to the Web trafficking site CrunchBase.

MySpace has also been on a steady decline due to its troubles in maintaining a solid user base. Many students and teens have noticed the lack of features and integration of user-friendly apps, and have departed from MySpace because of this.

“MySpace got less interesting because nothing new was being developed. It just became a boring everyday routine for me,” freshman Janelle Dela Cruz said.

The monotony of MySpace also lies within the housekeeping of HTML and the endless hours one wastes from refreshing the home page in hopes of a new comment or friend request.

Junior Sean Rodriguez feels that that slaving over his profile became mundane. “I’ve grown out of it,” Rodriguez said. “I was tired of decorating it and reading pointless spam and survey bulletins. With Facebook, you don’t have to worry about beautifying your page because everyone has the same layout.”

The excess of advertisements also added to the frustrations of many former MySpacers.

“There is too much intrusive advertising”, English teacher Kathleen Weltchek said. “Facebook doesn’t have pop-up advertisements like MySpace does. MySpace is less social and more commercial.”

Many students, however, think that MySpace still has a place in the realm of Internet titans.

“I don’t think MySpace will completely die out because people want to stay connected with their friends who don’t have a Facebook,” senior Allen Jerald said.

Countless students also think that MySpace dominates in a vital category of social networking that essentially keeps them alive: music. MySpace is consistently teeming with new artists and fresh music to accommodate the ears of those who want to stay up to date with today’s music.

“I liked how I got messages from artists wanting me to check out their music. I think MySpace is still standing because a lot of people still use it to look for new music,” senior Jun Oregana said.

In response to this advantage, Facebook has implemented a powerful photo-uploading engine, which many users are satisfied with.

““It’s really easy to share pictures. You have immediate access to other peoples photo albums and recent uploads,” English teacher Gretchen Tornabene said.

Currently, Facebook is the leader in photo-sharing sites with over 4.1 billion photos uploaded, eclipsing the photo-sharing powerhouses Flickr and Photobucket.

“The sharing capabilities Facebook has surpasses MySpace by a long shot. You can easily tag photos of people and even post personal videos on their wall,” said sophomore Hawa Foster.

In addition, the ease of use and simplicity of Facebook boosts its appeal even more with students.

“Finding friends, especially long lost ones, is much easier on Facebook than MySpace. I used to spend hours searching for and adding friends on MySpace,” freshman Kim Ly said.

Facebook developers have also introduced a simplified version of its site called Facebook Lite to accommodate users who only want to see their friends’ statues. The ‘Twitter-like’ set up makes it easy for one to update his or her profile on to go.

But Facebook, at first, was not created for everyone. Harvard student Mark Zuckerburg created the site strictly as a means of communication for the Harvard community and neighboring schools in the Boston area. Within several years, Facebook’s seemingly promising network had Internet powerhouses Yahoo, Microsoft, and Friendster offering to acquire the company for billions of dollars.

The real question is, will Facebook be the undisputed king of social networking sites? Or will it be another dying Internet fad?

“MySpace will die out sooner or later,” Creely said. “But I think that there will always be a new website that will attract people, so Facebook might be in the same boat [as MySpace] in the future.”

Wait for it…wait for it…BAM, the river card is the ace of spades which gives you the royal flush you needed to win the 2.3 million dollar pot. This is the anticipation that one will get while enjoying a nice competitive game of poker, one of the hundreds of games on Facebook.

Facebook’s wide variety of online flash games, including Facebook poker, Restaurant City, Typing Maniac, Yoville, and Mafia Wars, have taken the site by storm.

“All the games are simply just too fun,” freshman Bianca Magpayo said.

The games range from the childish Farmville and Pet Society to the more mature poker and Mafia Wars.

Part of why flash games appeal to students is because of the animations.

“[It’s the] bright lights and flashing color,” sophomore Darrell Nielsen said.

A bigger draw is the competition games provide.

“Sometimes, it’s just really fun to compare your high scores with friends to see who’s better at a certain game,” senior Greg Jay said.

Magpayo enjoys long, late night games of Bejeweled and Restaurant city, but she keeps on playing because of one of her friends.

“My friend Sergio Reyes took all my food in Restaurant City and I want to get everything back!” she said excitedly.

The communal aspect is a major cause of the boom in Facebook gaming in recent months.

“I think the games are booming because you can see your friends’ wall posts, and you check out the game and get hooked,” Jay said.

A lot of Facebook users share that repetitive wall posts from people may get annoying, especially if it shows their achievements in a certain game. Yet this is the attraction that brings many users to play games in which their friends are excelling.

Adults enjoy the games for similar reasons as students. English teacher Michelle Dwyer enjoys playing games while taking a break from grading her students’ essays.

“I love Scrabble! Especially the fact that I can chat with other people while playing the game,” Dwyer said. “I also play games on Facebook because I love the connection I have with my two sisters and being able to play with others.”

All of the benefits come with potential dangers.

“It takes away a lot of my study time, which is why I try to be cautious about playing games on Facebook,” Magpayo said.

“I have self-discipline when on my laptop, so I know when to play games and when to finish work,” Dwyer said. “I believe students should also try to have self discipline as well.”

The restraint required for staying on task, however, is difficult for some to harness.

“Once you start though, you need to finish the game!” she said.

Once Nielsen reached the end of his favorite games, he understood the merits of playing.

“The rewards you get such as beating your friends are amazing. Also you get a picture of a trophy when you win something!”

Fans from all over the Bay Area piled into the lawn section of Shoreline Amphitheatre for the two piano bands, with blankets, wicker baskets and plenty of friends in tow. Possibly as a result of the ailing economy, the population of the lawn was much more dense than that of the regular seats. Vedera, the opening act, gave off a vibe reminiscent of Silversun Pickups and A Fine Frenzy. Reigning from Kansas City, the band set the tone the two mellow, alt-rock bands. Unlike a majority of opening acts, Vedera’s set didn’t double as time to wait in the concession line; their charisma led to a warm reception from the audience. Andrew McMahon and Jack’s Mannequin cranked it out next, performing hits such as “Dark Blue” and “La La Lie” for dancing, lip-syncing fans. The favorite of their set, however, was a cover of Tom Petty’s “American Girl.” After their dynamic set, the audience entered The Fray. With a shocking, almost over-the-top light show and a combination of solid radio hits and new jams from their self-titled CD, the four-man ensemble rocked the stage for over an hour and a half.

On July 13th 2009, Coldplay, one of the biggest British alternative rock currently around, came to the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View to play a sold out show to a crowd of over 30,000 people. The show began promptly at 6 with quirky opening acts Kitty Daisy and Lewis, a British rockabilly trio, and Amadou & Mariam , an African blues duo from Mali, pumping the crowd with their melodic beats. Coldplay, infamous for their great live performance and amazing light shows, did not fail to impress with their set list showing variety from their early independent days to the current Viva La Vida monster hits. Special surprise? Look up youtube for their special version of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean”.

At Jamba Juice there is a phrase we have about blending smoothies known as “Witness the Whirl.” If you will indulge my cheesy metaphor, over my summer, I witnessed the blending of all valuable lessons of hard work and my personality become someone taking some responsibility.
As last school came to close last year, we all looked forward to hanging out with friends, and maybe even seeing the newest summer blockbusters. I enjoyed these same things over my summer, but personally the greatest sense of accomplishment was looking at the face of a customer as I gave them their delicious Strawberry Nirvana smoothie—working at my first job as a Jamba Juice employee.

My brother continually told me since I was a sophomore to get a job. He told me not to be the loser who has to beg their parents for money (His way of saying “don’t be like me”). Working actually helped me realize the fulfillment in taking that first step to be independent and contribute something to society—like top-of-the-line smoothies.

My decision to try to get a job was influenced not only by my brother’s words, but also by the fact that I needed to contribute money to my college fund. Tuitions for UC and CSU increased by nearly 10 percent over summer to help balance their budget, thus making any thing I could place in my savings important.

Soon after I took the steps to apply for jobs, Jamba Juice was the first to get back to me, and asked for an interview. Despite all the preparation I put into it session, my answers weren’t as scripted as I thought they’d be.

Rather than being uptight and uncomfortable, I tried to incorporate as much of my personality as possible— hence why the middle-aged man interviewing me and I discussed the newest Star Trek film. I am a professional after all. And as a professional I was hired 10 minutes into my interview.

I felt like a baby going into my first day on the job. I soon realized that this first job of mine was a transition phase in attempting to give myself more responsibility, and relieve my parents of some.

My transformation into a loyal servant carrying out the will of Jamba Juice was evident (I’m not brainwashed, I swear). I started out as the employee who, in my first week of employment, thought I was locked in the 20° walk-in-freezer for an entire minute until I realized it was a push door, not a pull door. I continued as the guy who soon memorized at least half of the recipes within a month.

What did all this amount to? A wonderful, crisp paycheck every other week. I think this is the point my brother was trying to emphasize. Guaranteed he never knew a thing about hard work in his high school years, I’m guessing he knew that feeling of getting money you worked hard for.

Although I didn’t get all the money out of my paycheck, it still felt liberating to have a source of income other than my parents or my grandparents’ holiday money. I’m still able to put it all away in my funds for college knowing it will pay off, when I won’t have to worry as much about all the loans and grants I’ll need.

Years from now maybe I’ll be a success. Someone might ask me what brought me to be successful. I wouldn’t doubt my answer would be “Learning the value of independence…courtesy of a cold, fruit smoothie.”
