The next production the theatre department has in store for students is Little Me, a Sid Caesar style comedy that has seen the likes of Broadway and theatre arts director Arlene Hood’s past.
“It’s hilarious because it was written as the star vehicle for Sid Caesar,” Hood said, “It’s a goofy comedy with a lot of goofy characters.”
In fact there are nearly a hundred different characters played by the twenty-four person crew. The sheer magnitude of the amount of costumes, characters, and sets (as the story spans over several decades) dispels many theatres from doing the production, but Hood has worked to downsize the musical’s requirements so it can be performed at Teves Theatre.
“I performed in it about thirty years ago and I’ve been waiting for the right time to perform it here,” Hood said.
The storyline itself is the love story between a poor girl and a rich boy with a disapproving rich mother who demands the girl find herself wealth, culture, and a social position before the couple can get married. The vaudeville comedy musical depicts the girl’s journey over sixty years while she tries to satisfy the rich boy’s mother.
Choreographing the musical is Carlos Lopez, who has been in Broadway shows. Hood met Lopez at a high school theatre competition at which she judged. Altogether, the musical is continuing to shape up for its debut on April 24.
“It’s a frenetic, absurd comedy that is very very fun,” Hood said, “Students will love it for fun and adults will love it for the old references.”
